We have designed multiple development units varying in maximum torque between 10Nm to 1200 Nm. There is a trade-off between the maximum torque and the size/weight of the drive, to get more information on this subject please contact us directly.
Yes, the drive can slip if the maximum design torque is surpassed. However, slip does not mean drive failure. Once the torque goes back into the operating regime, the drive will work properly again. This cannot be said for toothed systems because a too high torque will break the gear teeth and make the drive unusable. Therefore, our system can be seen as more robust.
The current configuration has the output located on the center of the drive, with the input being connected to the side of the drive. The center output is required for the drive’s working principle. An exterior routing is possible which allows for an output on the side, however, the drive’s rotation will be limited. The Archimedes drive has the widest possible gear ratios out of any drive system available. It can operate freely between a gear ratio of 50:1 to 1000:1 in a single stage. The gear ratio can even be outside of this band for specific applications.
We are currently working on a development kit. This kit can be used for your internal R&D testing to get familiar with the technology. Most applications require the use of an electric motor. Currently, we are focussing on robotics and high-tech machinery. In the near future, the Archimedes Drive can also be used in e-Bikes, cars, wind turbines, pumps, and medical equipment.
